UNICO 20’87’

We spent Thanksgiving week (2020) at UNICO. It was a beautiful resort! This is a great resort for people that love pools, good drinks, tasty food. If you are more of a beach person, this is not the resort for you. I’m going to break down my review into different categories.

Resort- general observations

  • Pros –
    1. Loved the Unlimited Inclusions!
    2. All of the inclusions were easy to book prior to arriving and once you were there.
    3. Great pools.
    4. Good food.
    5. Our Host was amazing. He text us the schedule of events each day.
    6. Loved the hats you were given upon arrival and the option to customize them. I took mine home!
  • Cons
    1. Beach isn’t good.
    2. Not much around it.
    3. It’s about an hour drive from Cancun.

Room – we stayed in an Alcoba swim up room

  • Pros
    1. The bed and pillows were amazing!
    2. AC worked perfectly.
    3. The shower had a rain shower that was amazing.
    4. Turn down service included Ferrero Chocolate.
    5. Plenty of drinks and snacks.
    6. Pool our room connected to was warm.
  • Cons
    1. The coffee in the room wasn’t very good.
    2. Most of the channels on the TV were in Spanish (but we were in Mexico).
    3. Pool chairs on our balcony weren’t very comfy.
    4. Walls were thin.
    5. The “swim up” wasn’t connected to the larger pools.
    6. The “pool” our room was connected to was small and not super clean.

Pools – there were three pools (not including the pools at the swim-up rooms or the pools that we weren’t allowed in).

  • Pros
    1. Great temperature! Not too hot and not too cold.
    2. Pool chairs were comfy.
    3. Towel service and fresh towels were brought to you at any time.
    4. Quite a few pool staff for ordering drinks and food.
    5. Pools were never overcrowded.
    6. 3 very different pools to chose from: small/quiet pool, large/quieter pool, and and active/loud pool.
  • Cons
    1. Cabana was not worth the money.
    2. Pool service was slow.
    3. Algae in the pool.
    4. There were two smaller pools that only certain guests were allowed in (by far the nicest pools). It had something to do with Hard Rock member levels. I thought this was silly….don’t call your resort an all-inclusive if there are certain areas that aren’t inclusive.

Beach

  • Pros
    1. The beach was beautiful.
    2. Waitstaff at the beach.
    3. Umbrellas, chairs, and side tables
    4. Staff to help with umbrellas.
  • Cons
    1. Beach was tiny.
    2. Beach was really rocky.
    3. Not many chairs available.
    4. Couldn’t spend much time at the beach because it was windy and the water was rough.
    5. You really need water shoes if getting in the ocean.

Food/Restaurants

  • Pros
    1. 4 choices for dinner: Steak house (20’87), Asian (Mura House), Italian (Mi Carisa), or Mexican food (Cueva Siete).
    2. For an all-inclusive, the food was outstanding.
    3. My favorite was the Mexican food (Cueva Siete). Carlos was the best waiter!
    4. The Cafe Inez had really good lattes and tasty pastries.
    5. Pizza by the pool was amazing.
    6. Popsicles from the popsicle cart were amazing.
    7. All of the restaurants and bars had really good cocktails! They gave you plenty of liquor in mixed drinks.
    8. Portion sizes were perfect!
  • Cons
    1. Service was hit or miss….either really good or really bad.
    2. Food or drinks by the pool took a long time.
    3. Cabana service/food was no better than non-cabana service/food.
    4. Wish there were more options. Only 2 options for breakfast and a few for lunch.
    5. We stayed 5 nights so we had to repeat a restaurant. Wish there were more restaurants for dinner as well.

Inclusions – we did a snorkeling excursion and I spent a day at the Spa.

  • Pros
    1. I loved that it was all organized through the resort.
    2. It was easy to book spa services.
    3. The spa was beautiful.
    4. The instructions for the excursions were clear and service/transportation was prompt.
    5. Our driver was Memo and he was so nice and helpful.
  • Cons
    1. Many of the inclusions had additional charges for transportation or just because they were “premium/upgraded”.
    2. Spa chair/bed was so uncomfortable (like a rock).
    3. The services that were available before and after your massage weren’t clear. I saw lots of stuff that I could have done but no one told me.
    4. The Spa services all have a 25% service fee. I considered this the tip. My only complaint was that it felt like the spa prices were extremely inflated in order to get as much as they could in their 25% fee.
